Multiple linked CMS websites

For an organisation with multiple branches it can be advantageous to have a number of content managed websites, each with their own independent login, but sharing a common design. This approach reduces design costs, ensures a consistent 'look and feel' across all websites yet allows some customisation and fully independent editorial control for each website.

The way the websites are referenced is a matter of choice:

Folders

A folder can be created for each 'branch' website. So for example, if the main website is located at www.mydomain.co.uk then the branch websites could be located at:

www.mydomain.co.uk/london
www.mydomain.co.uk/winchester
www.mydomain.co.uk/leeds
etc.

This option is quickest, as we don't have to create domains or subdomains and wait 48 hours for the internet's DNS to catch up with the changes. There is no extra cost for domain names.

This option is also likely to be best for search engine results, as all the content from the main website and 'branch' websites will appear under the same domain and subdomain ('www' is the subdomain in this case).

Sub domains

A subdomain can be created for each 'branch' website. So for example, if the main website is located at www.mydomain.co.uk then the branch websites could be located at:

london.mydomain.co.uk
winchester.mydomain.co.uk
leeds.mydomain.co.uk
etc.

Separate domains

You could locate each branch website at a separate domain. E.g:

www.mydomain.co.uk
www.mydomain-london.co.uk
www.mydomain-winchester.co.uk
www.mydomain-leeds.co.uk
etc.

This would cost more, as multiple domains will need to be registered and renewed. The branch websites will impart no search engine benefits to the main website.
