Will you get me to the top of the search engines?

If you are talking about searches for your company name, domain name, or a fairly esoteric term that is used frequently on your website, then you will almost certainly appear near the top of the listings without having to do anything special at all. This is because our websites are built to be "search engine friendly" in the first place. And, you have easy access to change the links, page title, meta tags and file names - all of which are "hot spots" for search engines.

If you want to appear at the top of the search results for a very common or highly sought-after term then it is going to be a lot more difficult, and probably very expensive. In this case you might consider Google's "sponsored links". This type of advertising is known as "pay per click" because you only pay when someone clicks on your advert and goes to your website. The cost per click can range from five pence to tens of pounds depending on how many other people want to appear under that keyword.

Can you optimise my website for search engines?
