If you register a domain name with a company other than 123Live, be sure to get confirmation of any charges the company may make to transfer your domain elsewhere. Some companies offer a low "headline rate" for domain registration but then charge you extra to transfer your domain, or to add other services. 123Live do not make any charge to transfer a domain away.

Multiple domains

Having multiple domains pointing to one website is a good idea if you have hyphenated/non-hyphenated versions or a .com as well as a .co.uk. But the redirection has to be done in the right way, otherwise you could be banned by search engines for having multiple websites with duplicate content. To avoid this problem we always use a safe "301 permanent redirect".

UK or international?

Many people think that a "dot com" is the coolest domain extension to have. Yes, it looks good and if you are an international company (or an American company) it is a good idea to get a dot com if it is available.

If you are a company who's customers are in the UK, a dot com can be counter productive. Here's how. Type "accountancy jobs" into Google. You'll get several hundred thousand pages listed. If you are looking for a job in the UK which ones will you click on?

The dot coms are probably American companies, but the ".co.uk" listings are almost certainly offering jobs in the UK, so you will click on those.

The same applies to any other type of business. Our advice is to use ".co.uk" if you are selling within the UK. There are cases where companies that export goods or services may also benefit from a ".co.uk". Which is more convincing: "ye-olde-antiques.com" or "ye-olde-antiques.co.uk"?

A side benefit of using a ".co.uk" is that there are a great many more domain names available. And, if you ever have a problem with your domain name you can pick up the phone to Nominet. Nominet is the organisation that looks after "uk" domain names. They are very friendly and helpful people.

Which extension?

The "org" extension

E.g. domain.org or domain.org.uk. "Org" is short for "organisation" and is intended for non-profit groups such as charities and clubs.

The "co" extension

E.g. domain.co.uk. "co" stands for "company" and is intended for commercial organisations. If you run a regular business then choose ".co.uk".

The "net" extension

E.g. domain.net or domain.net.uk. "net" is short for internet and is designed for use by internet service providers.

The "ltd.uk" extension

E.g. mycompany.ltd.uk. This is a special domain extension that is only available to limited companies in the UK. You must prove that you own a company with the same name as the "ltd.uk" domain that you want to register. This is to ensure that every company can have a domain name which exactly matches their business name. It's a very fair way of doing things and you can register your ".ltd.uk" domain whenever you want - no one else can grab it, but most people remember a ".co.uk" more easily.

The "gov" extension

E.g. dti.gov.uk. Sorry, you can't have one of these, the "gov" extension is only for government bodies.

We suggest that you choose an appropriate extension for your domain name, which is most cases will be ".co.uk" or ".com". "com" by the way stands for "commercial".

Domain scams

If you own a domain name (a website address), sooner or later you will get a call from a very urgent sounding person claiming that someone else is about to register a version of your domain name. They are very concerned that this would be a bad thing for you so, out of the kindness of the heart, they have taken the trouble to call you and give you the opportunity to buy this domain name at a hugely inflated price.

They will claim that the they can only "hold off" this other person for a very short time so you must secure this domain now or risk someone else taking your business away.

First, no one on the planet can predict if someone is about to buy a domain name, it is simply not technically possible.

Second, if you want another domain name similar to your own, you can buy it at a reasonable price from a reputable company and have it pointed to your existing website. But you probably don't need another domain.
